Over the last 16 months since the LAPD's initiative to reduce homelessness in Downtown LA began, the statistics bear out the program's successful impact on Downtown. The number of people sleeping in the streets of Downtown has dropped by 900, from 1,800 to 700. More importantly, violent crime has decreased by 40%. Similarly, deaths from homicide, disease and drug overdose has dropped by 50%. This program has effectively chased off most of the criminal elements who used make  Downtown so unattractive.
